Time and cost savings identified over excavate and replacement option on other parts of the project through joint constructability workshops.

The project

Stage 2 Gold Coast Light Rail project will connect the existing light rail system at Southport to heavy rail at the Helensvale station. While providing specialist constructability advice on soil mix solutions for bridge abutments, Keller identified further areas on the project where the method could be used to provide time and cost savings.

The challenge

A tight timeframe meant careful site planning and sequencing with the contractor had to be put in place to ensure the soil mixing operations was conducted without any standby time.

The solution

In lieu of a conventional “excavate and replace” technique, the client specified mass mixing for the project. A pre mobilisation site investigation and laboratory mixing regime ensured the mass mixing conducted on site would achieve the design shear strength requirements. Keller’s specialised soil mixing plant and equipment improved 6,900m3 of soil avoiding the need for off site disposal.
