The project
Focus Apartments is a contemporary and stylish new apartment tower in the heart of Southbank’s celebrated arts precinct. It will encompass ~593 apartments over 54 storeys. Keller was contracted to design and construct foundation piles using the CFA technique.
The challenge
There was a major geotechnical uncertainty where a known basalt tongue is common in the area, which could significantly impact piling works. Additional challenges included installing piles alongside an existing façade and temporary propping system. The Fundex F3500 is the largest piling rig in our fleet and was required to work in very close proximity to the props.
The solution
With extensive experience of foundation work in this area, we created a detailed geotechnical risk assessment and developed a strategy if we were to encounter basalt with our purpose-built tooling and management plan. Our client was confident that we have a considered and well managed risk solution. Working very cautiously around the props, Keller successfully installed all foundation piles, exceeding production targets and permitting the client to move onto the next stage of work ahead of schedule.
