Design & construction of a driven precast pile solution, with continual monitoring of existing wharf movements and pile as-built positions

The project

889 Collins Street Project is a multi-storey residential development located on the Yarra River in the Victoria Harbour Precinct on Collins Street.  The structure comprises a 30 Level North Tower and a 24 Level South Tower, combined to deliver 550 apartments with car parking situated in the 6 level podium structure.

440No. precast concrete piles of 270mm, 350mm and 400mm square size driven to 36-38m depth. 132No. sheet piles 600mm wide driven to 9 metres to support lift shaft excavation and shaft construction.

The challenge

Install precast piles, which are a displacement type pile, with a system to minimise movement of the upper soft soils adjacent to an existing sheet pile retaining sea wall.

The solution

A detailed sequencing focus for installation of precast piles, as well as predrilling of piles, was undertaken to minimise ground displacement. Monitoring of pile as-built information with continual review and amendments of pile design to accommodate ground movement.
